Democratic correspondent chronicles Lincoln's arrival: "Mr. Lincoln 
arrived this evening, and took rooms at the Peoria House—he 
looks jaded. I take it he has no hope—he is evidently 
disappointed in the feeling here—he is to reply to Senator 
Douglas on tomorrow afternoon."
