At 12 M. President and Mrs. Lincoln received diplomatic corps and cabinet officers, to begin time-honored custom of New Year's Day reception at White House. Military and Supreme Court justices follow at 12:30 P.M., and public at 1 P.M. "At half past two the jam was terrible." Washington Star, 2 January 1865.
