Lincoln writes to Dr. Benjamin Clarke Lundy, of Magnolia, Illinois, and offers advice for Republicans who wish to win control of the legislature. Lincoln suggests organizing "alphabetical lists of all the voters in each precinct, or Township," deleting the names of those who "may have died or removed, and adding such as will be entitled to vote at the next election. This will not be a heavy job, and you see how, like a map, it lays the whole field before you. You know, at once, how, and with whom to work." Lincoln adds, "[Y]ou need every vote you can get in Putman [County.] Let all be so quiet that the adve[r]sary shall not be notified." Abraham Lincoln to B. Clarke Lundy, 5 August 1857, CW, 2:412-13.

People ex rel. Koerner et al. v. Ridgely et al., case about which Lincoln wrote Gustave Koerner July 19, 1857, is called and continued. (Appointment of Koerner and others as trustees of State Bank of Illinois was involved.) Murder case—People v. John Bantzhouse—is set for trial next day. Morning is taken up with calling docket, making motions, and continuing cases.

In the Sangamon County Circuit Court case of People v. Bantzhouse, Lincoln writes and files an affidavit for a change of venue. Lincoln defends John Bantzhouse, who allegedly shot and killed Walter Clark during a struggle that took place at Bantzhouse's New Berlin home. Lincoln requests the change of venue because Bantzhouse "fears he will not receive a fair and impartial trial in . . . Sangamon [County]." The court grants a change of venue to Macoupin County. Lincoln writes R. E. Williams, Bloomington lawyer, in regard to case to be tried there in autumn. "I well remember the transaction; but as Bakewell will need no lawyer but you, and as there is likely to be some feeling, and both the parties are old friends of mine, I prefer, if I can, to keep out of the case.
