Lincoln telegraphs Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant regarding Confederate prisoner-of-war Roger A. Pryor. Several individuals encouraged Lincoln to approve a prisoner exchange involving Pryor, who is incarcerated at New York City's Fort Lafayette prison. Lincoln explains, "But . . . I have seen a despatch of yours showing that you specially object to his exchange. Meantime he has reached here & reported to me. It is an ungracious thing for me to send him back to prison, and yet inadmissable for him to remain here long. Can not you help me out with it?"
