Lincoln writes a comment on a letter addressed to Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton from Richard M. Edwards, who seeks clarification regarding a United States "oath of office requir[ement]." Edwards, of Tennessee, wishes to lead a Union regiment, but previously, he was "forced . . . to take an oath 'to support the confederate constitution.'" Lincoln writes, "On principle I dislike an oath which requires a man to swear he has not done wrong. It rejects the Christian principle of forgiveness on terms of repentance.
