Lincoln writes to his friend David Davis, who is the judge of Illinois's eighth judicial circuit. Lincoln encloses an appointment of Davis as "an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States." Lincoln adds, "After the fall election in Illinois shall be past, I shall be very glad to see you generally, and particularly on a matter personal to myself."
