President Lincoln writes to Major General George B. McClellan, who commands the Army of the Potomac, regarding McClellan's offer to provide Lincoln with an assessment of the "present state of Military affairs throughout the whole country." Lincoln expresses interest unless doing so "would . . . divert too much of your time, and attention from the Army under your immediate command." Lincoln adds, "I would be very glad to talk with you, but you can not leave your camp, and I can not well leave here." George B.
