In the afternoon, Lincoln and his wife, Mary, go to the Navy Yard to "witness some interesting trials of a breech-loading cannon" that James C. C. Holenshade, of Cincinnati, Ohio, demonstrates. A newspaper reports, "A large number of ladies and gentlemen, including several members of Congress," join the Lincolns to watch the demonstration. The paper notes, "The first discharge of the piece interrupted one of the President's stories, after which the experiments proceeded in a satisfactory manner."
