President Lincoln writes to Secretary of the Treasury Salmon P. Chase and introduces James Gordon Bennett, Jr., whose father, Bennett, Sr., publishes the New York Herald newspaper. Lincoln encourages Chase to meet with Bennett, who offers "a fine yacht of 160 tons burthen . . . [and] some other vessels of the same class" that may be of use in the government's war effort.
