Lincoln writes Ward Hill Lamon about indictment which he (Lincoln) had drawn. "I think I had no authority but the Statute when I wrote the Indictment. In fact, I remember but little about it. . . . I am so busy with our case on trial here, that I can not examine authorities near as fully as you can there. If, after all, the indictment shall be quashed, it will prove that my forte is as a Statesman, rather than as a Prossecutor." He also writes note of recommendation for James W. Somers of Urbana.
