Lincoln is having difficulty averting trouble between different Republican factions in Illinois. There is still talk of Judd's "treachery." Herndon has been reviving old stories of 1855, and Judd has complained. "I did not press him about the past; but got his solemn pledge to say nothing of the sort in the future."
