"Abraham Lincoln, who was defeated . . . by, as we think, the withholding of certain papers in his behalf,—will not now from the peculiar state of his private affairs, accept the office, even if it should be offered to him. . . . But Mr. Lincoln will most cheerfully and heartily sustain Hon. Cyrus Edward for the appointment."]
