On the first day of the Menard County Circuit Court, Lincoln represents Andrew Charles in the adultery case of People v. Charles, on a change of venue from the Sangamon County Circuit Court. Charles changes his plea to guilty, and Judge Samuel H. Treat orders him to pay a $50 fine and the court costs. The state's attorney decides not to prosecute Charles in two other indictments— People v. Charles and Busey (larceny) and People v. Charles and Busey (burglary). In Cleaveland v. Meadows, John P. Urquhart, the attorney for appellee Asa Cleaveland, asks the court to dismiss the appeal of Lincoln's client James Meadows. Edward D. Baker and Jesse B.
